Channeling Clark Griswold

Christmas is the hap, hap, happiest time of year in our household and this is the year that I finally plan to channel Clark Griswold and decorate the house with lights.

Okay, maybe not quite to that extent, but we’ve got this great A-frame house that’s just begging to be decked out for the holidays and I’m going to find some time to do it. It might helped if I stepped away from the computer for a while, huh?

Anyways, I have never really gone all out on house Christmas lights before, but I know what I like and what I don’t like. A lot of lights is fine, if done well. Too many lights with no rhyme of reason? Not so good. I’d rather see just a few simple strands tastefully and artfully hung than 700 lines of bulbs strewn about haphazardly. As for the type of lights, I’m fine with the mini bulbs for indoor Christmas trees, but there’s nothing like the big old fashioned bulbs for the outdoor house lights.

Christmas lawn decorations? I’m not a big fan. I don’t think I’d ever toss a huge inflatable Santa Claus or one of those light up reindeer on the front yard. It’s a little too cheesy for me. There’s a house in every neighborhood that has a dozen of those things and I always think it looks like the North Pole threw up in the yard. I like my decorations more classic and old school. Again, I’m a bit old-fashioned like that. I am, of course, fine with a Nativity scene in the yard if you can make it look respectable. After all, that’s what Christmas is all about.

  1. I used to get Christmas lights when I worked at ShopKo for 90% off a week or two after Christmas. It’s unbelievable how high the markup is on Christmas crap! If you need help putting anything up, let me know. I think we’re sticking with the interior this year.

  2. Thanks, Joey. I may take you up on that offer to help. You have a significant height and reach advantage that could come in handy.
